Kim Mickle

Kim began 2008 by competing in the Sydney Grand Prix and two weeks later competed in the Australian Championships, missing the gold medal for the first time in four years to finish second behind Kathryn Mitchell.

She bounced back in 2009 to claim her fourth national crown.

INTERESTING FACTS

Kim was a junior official at the Sydney 2000 Olympics. Her uncle, Greg Mickle, is a leading surf lifesaver. Also a leading WA soccer player, Kim enjoys body boarding, and playing the electric guitar. Mickle started competing in Little Athletics after she saw an advertisement in a school newsletter.

SPORTING CAREER

2001 – At the world youth championships, Kim achieved a personal best of 49.73 in the qualifying round to rank No. 2 among the qualifiers. Winning the final, she added 2.1m to her personal best with a throw of 51.83m.

2002 – Made the final of the javelin at the world junior championships, but injured her elbow on her second throw.

2005 – Bounced back in March, taking the national title with a throw of 55.91m.

2006 – Won the 2006 national title with a PB of 58.56m. Just missed out on the bronze medal at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games when Jamaican Olivia McKoy passed her by nine centimetres on her final throw. Finished a very good fifth at the World Cup in Athens again going close to her PB.

2007 – Won her third national title in a row. Threw a new PB in Perth with 59.36m.

2008 – Missed the gold medal for the first time in four years at the national championships, finishing second behind Kathryn Mitchell.

2009 – Kimberley won the javelin throw at the Sydney Track Classic in February with a best effort of 60.68m before recording a new personal best and world championships A-qualifying distance of 63.49m in March. In taking out her fourth national javelin crown in Brisbane later that month with a throw of 60.69m, Kimberley secured her place on her first world championships team.Taking her good form on the road, Kimberley headed to the Osaka Grand Prix in May where she recorded victory with a throw of 62.25m. Throwing over the 60m-mark on eight occasions this year, Kim posted 11 consecutive victories before defeat in Lausanne (SUI). She went on to record further wins in Switzerland and Finland.
