Lisa Weightman Breakfast

Australia’s number one marathon runner, Lisa Weightman, will be in Perth next week as she uses the Perth City to Surf as one of her final lead-up races before the Commonwealth Games in October.

In 2008 Lisa burst onto the marathon scene with the equal-quickest debut time in Australian history. Since then she has represented Australia at the Beijing Olympics, the Berlin World Championships and won her first international marathon in Nagano earlier this year.

It hasn’t always been smooth sailing for the Aussie number one, who endured seven stress fractures through her twenties and was told on countless occasions that she was “just not good enough” to make it at the highest level.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Lisa will be doing a series of public appearances while in Perth next week. AWA would like to invite members to the following two events:

All AWA members and friends are offered a 10% discount on a breakfast with Lisa from 7.15am next Friday 27 August. To obtain the discount, enter the code “ATHSWA” on the event website at www.sportsevents.eventbrite.com. Further event details can be found on this page and also at http://www.sammaxwell.info/2010/08/join-australias-1-marathon-runner-for.html Note, that just for attending the breakfast, attendees receive a FREE $50 Sports Fever Shoe Voucher.

Next Thursday 26 August from the Sports Fever Cottesloe store at 5pm, have the opportunity to run with, meet, and chat to Lisa. She will be able to talk individually about her Olympic experience, her training, her injuries, or how she copes with full time training and full time work! Athletes, coaches, family and friends are encouraged to attend with the new Athletics Season just around the corner. Sports Fever is having an “Adidas sale” that evening, with all Adidas footwear, apparel and accessories available at a discounted price.

For any queries about either of the above events, please contact Sam Maxwell via email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or on 0438842123.

London lets down West Australians

The London leg of the Diamond League series has not gone to plan for the WA athletes competing. The best result came from Ben Offereins, who was asked to run in the 400m 'B' final.

The 24-year-old finished fourth behind three Brits in a time of 46.59, well outside his best run of 2010 (44.86). Conrad Williams, Robert Tobin, and Richard Buck all crossed the line ahead of the Australian Champion but none of them broke 46 seconds. The two best British 400m runners were reserved for the 'A' final, with Michael Bingham and Martin Rooney finishing 4th and 6th respectively behind an electric Jeremey Wariner.

The Texan, a former World and Olympic Champion, stopped the clock in 44.67 ahead of Jamaican 25-year-old Jermaine Gonzalez (44.80). Gonzalez's run was four-tenths outside his world-leading time of 44.40 which he posted in Monaco. The Jamaican is now the warm favourite for the Commonwealth title.

Offereins begins his European Campaign

National 400m Champion Ben Offereins has begun a European campaign in the lead-up to the Commonwealth Games in October finishing fourth at the Diamond League event in Stockholm on Friday night (Perth Time). The 400m was an invitational in Stockholm that did not count towards the Diamond League race. Former Olympic and World Champion Jeremy Wariner was a late withdrawal but Offereins was still against a class field that included the fastest non-American of all-time, Gary Kikaya (Democratic Republic of Congo), and former Olympic 400m hurdles silver medalist Danny McFarlane (Jamaica).

Jody's Journal

Jody Henry today provides the first sequel to the Commonwealth Games athlete diaries, the 25-year-old Western Australian elaborating on...

Australian 200m and 400m champion Jody Henry has written another entry in her online Athlete Diary for athletics.com.au.

The 25-year-old is gearing up for a big month ahead where she is trying to run an A-qualifier ahead of the Commonwealth Games in October. But like every girl she's more excited about a new pair of shoes from new sponsor Nike! Here's a slice of what Jody has written.

"Firstly, Sam Maxwell is now my manager - I just giggled ridiculously over that! I cannot believe that I have a manager!! And in his managerial duties has just scored me a ‘dum dum dummm’ shoe sponsor (Nike)!! To some athletes who move up the ladder swiftly and without too many glitches, this may seem the normal way of doing things. Unfortunately, I am not such an athlete! These things do not happen to me." Henry said.

To read more about Jody visit her Athlete Diary at athletics.com.au or visit her WA Athletics profile.
