WA Official of the Year Award

WA Official of the Year Award

Author: waadmin/Thursday, 1 November 2018/Categories: News, Featured

Following the first competition of the season, Athletics WA officials joined us at our annual Officials Luncheon to celebrate our volunteers and to announce the 2017-18 Official of the Year.

This year the award was jointly presented to Vicki Birtles and Kylie McVee – two very deserving recipients.

Vicki became involved with officiating over 10 years ago when her daughter Rachel (now also a regular official) started athletics. Vicki says she’s never been good at just ‘watching’ sport and finds volunteering much more rewarding through being part of the competition.

“If it wasn't for volunteers, events like athletics would not happen. And of course, you cannot forget about the fantastic people you meet and the friendships your make, let alone the places you travel to,” Vicki describes of her experience.

Kylie began officiating when her three children joined Little Athletics at the Kingsway Little Athletics Centre in 2011. After volunteering at the club, Kylie attending several officiating education sessions and was inviting to try officiating at Athletics WA competitions.

After volunteering at the 2013 Australian Junior Athletics Championships, as a basket carrier and runner for the Competition Administration team, Kylie had a blast and was keen to continue her officiating journey. Kylie finds inspiration in the amazing feats of athletes, including witnessing David Carr break the World Steeplechase at a Strive competition. Another highlight of her officiating career to date was with the 80-90 years of age ladies at the Hammer Throw at the World Masters Championships in Perth in 2016, which she describes as “not much English spoken between them but heaps of laughs and a lot of fun!”.

Kylie officiated at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast and Vicki was also a part of the Games as an athletics volunteer.

If you are interested in becoming involved in officiating, we are always looking for new volunteers and welcome your enquiry to the Athletics WA office.
