The 2019 World University Games (Summer Universiade) took place in Naples, Italy from the 3-14th of July, where five West Australian athletes represented the green and gold.
In his Australian debut, Grant Szalek (coached by Grant Ward) finished 9th in the Men’s High Jump Final with 2.15m to cap off an outstanding season. Grant set his personal best of 2.21m earlier this year.
Brianna Ilarda, who is currently based in the USA, finished 5th in the Women’s 3,000m Steeplechase in 9:53.23.
In the Men’s Pole Vault, Angus Armstrong (Alex Parnov) and Stephen Clough (Paul Burgess) progressed easily through to the finals and finished 10th and 11th respectively, both clearing 5.06m.
Declan Tingay (coached by Steven Tingay) was unfortunately disqualified in the Men’s 20km Race Walk, despite the great form that saw him claim silver at the recent Oceania Athletics Championships.
Congratulations to all athletes and their coaches on representing Australia proudly throughout the Games.
