The 2018 Australian All Schools Championships commence today with 1,095 of the best high school athletes in the nation to converge on Cairns.
The three-day competition is set to showcase some of Western Australia’s top junior talent, including Sophie White, Sasha Zhoya, Jackson Hamilton and Etienne Rousseau.
White, who won silver at the recent Youth Olympic Games in Argentina, will have her sights set on the Australian Under 18 100m Hurdles record of 13.14, which she jointly owns with Sally Pearson.
“I always have a goal to run a clean race and run a personal best,” said White in a recent Athletics Australia interview. “Achieving the Australian under-18 record would be amazing and would mean that I had a new legal personal best but I will have to see what happens in the race and the result will take care of itself.”
White will be competing in the U18 100m Hurdles, U18 200m and the 4x100m relay.
Sasha Zhoya turned heads at the 2017 Australian All Schools with three gold medals in the U16 200m, U16 Pole Vault and the U18 110m Hurdles, where he also set a new National Record. Zhoya will enter the Championships in personal best form after breaking his own State U18 100m Record in November and is set to compete in the U18 Pole Vault and U18 110m Hurdles.
Para star Jackson Hamilton will take on the able-bodied field in the U16 Discus Throw, in addition to the Para Shot Put and Para Discus Throw.
“I’m aiming to achieve PB’s and hopefully gold in both para shot and discus, and to try and place top-5 in able bodied discus,” said Jackson of his goals for the Championships.
Hamilton has broken Australian para records on 28 occasions – read Athletics Australia’s full feature here.
Throws star Etienne Rousseau is another exciting prospect for the 2018 All Schools Championships, where he will compete in the U16 Shot Put, Discus, Hammer Throw and Javelin. Rousseau will be a favourite in the Shot Put and Discus Throw after victory in both events at the 2018 Australian Junior Athletics Championships.
The Australian All Schools Championships will be held from the 7-9 December 2018 at Barlow Park Athletics Centre.
